The proliferation of regulatory changes around the world has aroused interest in the regulation and governance of personal data throughout Africa. Personal data protection legislation may potentially restrict African country's ability to conduct international business trade if compliance is seen as inadequate by a data protection compliant country or multinational entity.

Despite the policy gaps, African countries have shown significant interest in establishing data protection and data privacy laws. This is evidential both in comments by policymakers and draft legislation in several AU countries currently.
In this session, we shall discuss the following:
1. The current state of Privacy and Data Protection in Africa 2. Privacy and Data Protection at the African Union Level 3. The Challenges and Opportunities
4. The Way Forward for Africa
