Reuben Moyo

Reuben Moyo is a lecturer in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) department at Mzuzu University. He holds a bachelor’s degree in ICT which was obtained from Mzuzu University in Malawi and a Master’s degree (MEng) in Information and Communication Engineering majoring in computer vision which was obtained from Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) in China. He currently serves as the Head of the ICT Department whose role is to provide overall guidance in administrative, academic and research/projects tasks in the department in line with the university’s vision and strategic plan. Reuben is a member of the Mzuzu University ICT committee which is an advisory body of all ICT service providers at Mzuzu University. Reuben is passionate about developing solutions that aim at improving the wellness of Malawians and the world at large. As a lecturer, he teaches, conducts and supervises students’ research, and implements donor-funded projects. Besides these, Reuben Moyo also serves on various university committees. Among other achievements related to bridging the digital divide, in 2021, the UNDP Accelerator through the Ministry of Education awarded him and his team a small grant of 15 million Kwacha to develop a prototype of virtual labs for Physics and Chemistry subjects for secondary schools in Malawi. In 2015, he was awarded a $10,000 grant that was funded by the Google Education Fund where Computer Studies teachers in secondary schools were trained on how to use open-source resources to improve their work and also trained them on how to code using Python programming language. In 2017, he also received another grant from Fair-Denmark (an NGO based in Denmark) which aimed at equipping and empowering secondary schools in the Northern Education Division with local or offline teaching and learning electronic resources to improve access to ICTs in the rural areas. Reuben has been involved in various policy formulation and implementation engagements. Due to his resourcefulness, he has also been engaged in several academic programme curriculum development and review sessions and consultancies as an expert in ICT. Reuben has worked pro bono with several local NGOs. Among these are the Centre for Youth and Development, Kwithu Kitchen, Hope for Relief organisation and tMinds society. Besides, Reuben also boasts some industrial experience in IT through his work with techNix and Mlatho Tech companies.
